FAQ’s for Indian Hills Magnet

Although we currently don’t have answers to all of the questions we are slowly gathering questions and answers that may help MELP families with this transition.

Q) What aftercare options are available at Indian Hills? How do I register for them?
Community Education After School Program.

  • Starts immediately after the last bell M-F, goes until 6 pm.
  • Registration for is on the School District’s Community Education webpage
    • Currently the web page lists that registration opened August 7, 2023, so expect registration along these timeline for next year.
    • Cost. Registration $75. Tuition: $325 per month per student.
  • Indian Hills only has 35 spots and fills up immediately every year.

JCC Club J picks up after school at Indian Hills.
  • It is currently full.
  • Waitlist for next year opens Feb 20th, at noon.
  • After school programs are available through outside groups.  These would be similar to KidsStage, Chess club, etc. at Hawthorne.
  • Information on how to register will come out as the program is offered.
  • We know some parents are trying to encourage Camp Wildlife to do a pick up at Indian Hills.  We will let you know when we know if this is an option.

Q) Can non-magnet sibling(s) enroll at Indian Hills?  Is there space?  What priority do they have in open enrollment – can they select a sibling at the school right now as their sibling has been automatically placed at IH?
A) You are able to apply for open enrollment.  Mark that you have a sibling enrolled at Indian Hills (your magnet sibling counts).   This gives your student number one priority for open enrollment placement.  You also should mark that you are applying because of school closure if your non-magnet student(s) is currently enrolled at Hawthorne.
Deadlines:
Normal open enrollment: now until Friday, February 2nd. Notified March 15.
Second open enrollment period: February 5, 2024 – February 18. Notified March 15. Only for schools affected by closure and boundary change.
Late open enrollment period: April 1 until next school year. Notification varies.

The day that you submit the open enrollment application does not change your spot on the priority list at this time.  It might make a difference for the late open enrollment period starting April 1st.

Here is the school choice / open enrollment web page.

If you had applied for open enrollment prior to January 10th.  Brian Conley has now told us, you need to COMPLETELY reapply and select school closure as the reason.

Q) When will I have a bus schedule?
A) Bus schedules will be available later this spring.

We do have an exact date when the bus schedule will be released but will keep everyone posted.

At this point busing is guaranteed for 3 years if Indian Hills is not your “new area school”.   The ELP department has stated that this may evolve in the future.

All students will be bussed if they live further than 1.5 miles from the school or have to cross a “dangerous” street.
– Foothills is deemed dangerous, we believe.
– We have not heard about which other streets will also be classified this way.

Q) When will school start and end? Will the District be moving to a 3-tier start time? Right now magnet schools have a shorter school day, we end at 2:20 instead of 2:30 because of busing – will that continue?
A) Mr. Luthy thought that the hours would stay the same, but we will wait to hear from the district for official school start and end times.

Q) Will magnet students be able to access all of Indian Hills special programming (art, music, science)? What does that mean for our own program-specific programming?
A) They have music for K-3, art for everyone, and science for everyone. The extra music and half of the art is paid for by PTO fundraising. They also have their own non-profit that currently funds the additional science.

Q) How do I transfer / switch magnet sites? Can I switch to Nibley’s if I have a K or 1st grader and want to?
A) Link to Magnet Transfer Request

Q) If a sibling tests into a magnet program later & their new area school is elsewhere, will they still be given preferential placement at Indian Hills?

Q) What will happen to Spanish, opera & Shakespeare?

Q) If I have a sibling who is not in K or 3rd can I have them tested for magnet placement?
A) Yes, testing is happening right now. Please contact the district to find testing times and locations.

Q) Kindergarten is no longer available in the MELP/G & T program but Kindergarten Students are wanted at Indian Hills.
They want K students (and likely other siblings). They had to use discretionary funds to fund 2 teachers positions last year so they would love to have more students to increase funding from the district going forward.

Q) Does Indian Hills have pre-K?
A) Ms. Asha (a former Hawthorne para) is the pre-K teacher at Indian Hills. If you have pre-K students, you can email Mr. Luthy about enrolling your student(s).

We meet on the second Tuesday of every month.

The Steering Committee is in need of help with the Newsletter and also a New Parent Representative. If you’re interested, please contact Sara Wikstrom Schulze, the Steering Committee Chair.

Science at Hawthorne

This year many classes at Hawthorne have gotten to use our school’s microscopes because of the effort of parent volunteers.  (Thank you to those of you who have helped out). 1st and 2nd graders got to look for tardigrades (and other organisms) in lichen and moss.  4th graders examined different types of cells.  6th graders are scheduled to look for plankton and examine water quality in water samples in April.

During these classes, students made their own slides and got to practice their scientific observation skills.  The students that have participated thus far have had a great time in this hands-on science class.  For many, it is their first experience using a microscope.  We want to keep this experience going, so keep the look out for information about how you can help in the future.

Thank You

Tree Utah is responsible for the generous donation of all the brand new trees that were planted at Hawthorne this fall. Thank you so very much Tree Utah! We so much appreciate you!
